Waikiki LGBTQ Shoreline

LGBTQ Shores: The Premier Hawaiian Destinations for Embracing Pride

Do you have a fondness for visiting gay-designated beaches? Or perhaps you're in pursuit of an environment where you can feel at ease while basking in the sun's warmth? Hawaii extends a warm reception to LGBTQ visitors, and the islands boast numerous welcoming shores for the gay community.

Hawaiian LGBTQ Coastlines

Gay… Straight… Black… White… Local… Tourist… In Hawaii, acceptance reigns!

This archipelago serves as a haven for all individuals, a key reason for my deep affection for residing here. This sentiment absolutely extends to the LGBTQ community. Hawaii harbors a notably vibrant LGBTQ population and possesses a long-standing reputation as a sanctuary where everyone finds acceptance.

Therefore, we felt this juncture presented an opportune moment to reveal to our readership our compilation of the top 12 Hawaiian beaches favored by the gay community:

Oahu's Shores

  • Diamond Head Lighthouse Beach: Situated beyond the Waikiki Zoo vicinity and just beneath the iconic Diamond Head lighthouse, this particular coastal stretch is found. It constitutes a modest ribbon of sand interspersed with numerous boulders, offering sunbathers secluded spots to relax. This locale is reputed to be somewhat "cruisy," and the unofficial textile-free zone commences at the terminus of Beach Road (a short distance from Diamond Head Road), extending for approximately six hundred feet along the water's edge (though public nudity is statutorily forbidden). Further insights into Hawaii's nudist beaches can be found herein.
  • Banzai Pipeline (Ehukai Beach Park): This location is exceedingly popular amongst Oahu's gay demographic. Furthermore, its renown is considerable; the colossal, barreling waves at Ehukai Beach Park establish it as one of the planet's most perilous surfing arenas and a celebrated venue for the esteemed Triple Crown of Surfing. It is important to note that this is not a location for nude sunbathing, merely one of Oahu's relaxed LGBTQ-friendly coastlines.
  • Queen's Surf Beach: This segment of the shoreline is situated within Kapiolani Park, positioned at Waikiki's conclusion, toward the Diamond Head aspect. This particular beach garners considerable favor from both surfers and vacationers alike, and the practice of cruising is notably absent. Nevertheless, it does present ample opportunities for social interaction and connection. Moreover, Queen's Surf Beach offers an exceptional setting for novice surfers or those wishing to learn stand-up paddleboarding, owing to its gentle and manageable wave conditions.

Maui's LGBTQ Coastlines

  • Little Beach (Puu Olai Beach): This stretch of sand is exceptionally favored by the gay community and draws both gay men and families who embrace nudism (the primary gathering spot for gay individuals is located on its furthest extremity). The beach experiences intense solar heat (it is imperative to bring ample sunscreen), and amenities are non-existent, necessitating the use of surrounding shrubbery for restroom needs should nature call.
  • Kaihalulu Beach: While not universally recognized as a "gay" beach, it merits inclusion due to the breathtaking "red" sand present, which is, in reality, more akin to a collection of red and black volcanic pebbles. Its visual appeal remains remarkable, though navigating it in flip-flops proves rather challenging!
  • Wailea Beach:  The Wailea Beach is adjacent to the renowned Four Seasons and Grand Wailea establishments, both of which are hotels that cater to families and are also welcoming to the LGBTQ community on Maui. A substantial number of same-sex couples choose these resorts for their honeymoon celebrations. This beach experiences considerable foot traffic, making it an excellent venue for informal (fully-clothed!) social engagement.

Big Island's Shores

  • Honokohau Beach: Situated within the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, this beach serves as a superb gathering place for members of the gay community. However, it is crucial to understand that nudity is stringently prohibited (and actively monitored by federal authorities!). Visitors are encouraged to appreciate the scenic Kona vistas and unwind in comfort at this splendid location.
  • Kehena Beach: This picturesque shoreline is rather secluded and is recognized as a destination where nudity is permissible and is frequently patronized by gay men. Mondays are unofficially designated as the gay day at Kehena Beach, though a welcoming atmosphere for the LGBTQ community can generally be experienced on most days. What further distinguishes this location from other gay beaches? It's not uncommon for spinner dolphins to frolic in the waters not far from the shore.
  • Waialea Beach (Beach 69): The nomenclature associated with this beach might suggest a greater degree of allure than what is actually present. The appellation originates from a utility pole that designates the parking area for this particular coastal spot. In actuality, numerous accounts indicate that the smaller beach area adjacent to Pole 67 tends to attract a greater number of gay visitors. It is common to observe individuals engaging in nude sunbathing on weekdays, and it provides an excellent setting for snorkeling, swimming, and potentially making new acquaintances.

Kauai's Textile-Free Shores

  • Donkey Beach: As you approach the oceanfront, maintain a leftward direction and ascend to reach the beach. The furthest extremity is considered one of Kauai&8217;s favored spots for the gay community.  This location previously held a reputation for being a nude beach, but increased law enforcement vigilance necessitates exercising caution.
  • Kauapea Beach (Secret Beach): The practice of sunbathing without attire is prevalent here, and patrons will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramas (both of the expansive ocean and the picturesque island!).
  • Lydgate State Park: Given that this is a state-administered park, the practice of sunbathing in the nude is statutorily forbidden. Nonetheless, it continues to attract a significant number of gay travelers who delight in the scenic surroundings. This beach is staffed by lifeguards and offers shower facilities, with the most frequented section by gay patrons situated between the golf course and the residential condominium complexes.
