Aruba's Gay-Friendly Nightlife

When pondering travel to the Caribbean as a same-sex couple, it may present a small hurdle considering the region's conservative attitudes, alongside even anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in some territories.

Nevertheless, the ABC islands, consisting of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao, are significantly ahead of the rest of the Caribbean, therefore emerging as favored selections among gay travelers journeying throughout the area.

During our last Atlantis gay cruise, we initially experienced Aruba for a single day, and swiftly fell in love with the island's distinctive vibe, the powdery beaches, water as clear as glass, and vibrantly colored houses. We were certain we desired to return and jumped at the opportunity for a lengthier stay later that same year. We were truly excited to discover just how welcoming Aruba was for the LGBTQ+ community!

Is Aruba Accepting of the LGBTQ+ Community?

Simply stated - when visiting the island of Aruba as a visitor, the answer is yes!

Aruba embraced us wholeheartedly as gay travelers when we were there, and we felt notably secure and content during our time spent there.

Along with its neighbors, Bonaire and Curaçao, Aruba stands as a top selection for LGBTQ+ travelers touring the Caribbean - it is not surprising that it was a stop during the world's largest gay cruise.

However, it should be highlighted that, similar to numerous other locations globally, a gay tourist's experience might greatly differ from that of a gay local. We interacted with numerous locals while on the island, and the general agreement was that, despite remaining safe and despite no crimes being reported against local LGBTQ+ individuals, public sentiment regarding LGBTQ+ people differs - especially among the older generations.

Notwithstanding this, Aruba is making considerable advancements in enhancing its LGBTQ+ friendliness…check out the subsequent portion for additional insights!

LGBTQ+ Rights in Aruba

LGBTQ+ rights have seen substantial advancement throughout the recent few decades - although, there is still substantial work to be done.

Whilst both male and female same-s3x activity is legal, same-s3x marriage is not yet legitimized. However, as part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Aruba recognizes same-s3x marriages performed and registered in the Netherlands. Consequently, although they are unable to legally wed on the island itself - currently! - traveling to the Netherlands to solemnize marriage is an option for same-s3x couples with Dutch nationality.

Although marriage has yet to be legalized, a measure was put forward in 2016 that authorized registered partnerships - both same- and opposite-s3x. This mirrors a same-s3x civil union, granting many of the same rights as marriage. This bill passed and went into effect in 2021. Interestingly, when the Aruban parliament voted to legitimize the legislation, it marked the first time a Caribbean parliament had done so.

Nevertheless, it appears that the legalization of same-s3x marriage is on the horizon! In November 2023, the legalization of same-s3x marriage in both Aruba and Curaçao was brought before a hearing at the Supreme Court in the Netherlands, with a verdict expected to be issued approximately this June. Fingers crossed!

Furthermore, Aruba has anti-discrimination laws in place - encompassing employment, the provision of goods and services, and regarding LGBTQ+ individuals serving in the military, as well as across other areas.

UPDATE July 2024: The High Council has proclaimed that same-sex marriage is now legitimate in both Aruba and Curacao!

Things to do in Aruba for LGBTQ+ Travelers

One of the earliest things that grabbed our attention regarding Aruba was that, while the island is the epitome of the classic white sand, blue sea, palm tree-lined beaches that appear when picturing the Caribbean, and it would be incredibly effortless to lounge on the beach all day - there is SO much more to explore on the island!

We spent eleven nights on the island and had the ideal equilibrium between actively participating in activities and exploring, along with unwinding and topping up our tans.

Explore Arikok National Park

The picturesque Arikok National Park in Aruba is situated on the island's eastern side and actually constitutes approximately twenty percent of the island's total land area.

The park represents an ideal locale for observing Aruba's varied landscapes and natural marvels. While traversing the park, you'll encounter a diverse array of plant and animal species that are native to the island.

The terrain varies from sand dunes to beaches, volcanic rock formations, and more cacti than you could imagine. Also, there is no shortage of natural wonders either - a natural pool, caverns containing original Indian drawings, stunning beaches - you could easily dedicate a whole day to seeing something distinct every hour!

Visitors to the park are obligated to buy a ticket to enter Arikok National Park, with the proceeds going towards the park's conservation as well as various educational programs the park runs.

Once inside the park, visitors can freely explore, whether driving through the park or on foot on one of the numerous hiking trails.

However, for the paramount experience, we strongly encourage you to book a guided tour, escorted by a Park Ranger who will bring attention to many items you would likely overlook otherwise.

We hiked throughout the park for about ninety minutes accompanied by one of the rangers and were extremely appreciative of all the in-depth knowledge we received concerning the items we were observing.

Key attractions within the park:

Quadirikiri and Fontein Caves: Both of these caves display gorgeous stalagmites and stalactites, some of which have formed pillars. Both caves also contain drawings dating back thousands of years from the Indians. Dos Playas: This location presents one of the most breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea from within the park, if not from the whole island. While it's not a swimming beach due to the forceful winds and currents, it is favored by windsurfers. It also serves as the nesting location for Aruba's leatherback turtles, where they lay their eggs. Conchi - The Natural Pool: The Natural Pool has evolved into one of Aruba's premier attractions, a must-visit for anyone exploring Arikok National Park. This natural pool is a seawater pool, segregated from the open ocean by the surrounding lava rocks. It's quite a distance from the entrance to Arikok, necessitating a vehicle.

For more information, like how to reach the park, or to reserve a guided hike, you can go to their website here.

Scuba Diving

We are both passionate scuba divers, and whenever we're visiting a destination recognized for its diving, we're definitely going to seize the opportunity!

Aruba is home to some incredible diving sites, and it is the perfect location for both qualified experts and aspiring divers.

The coral reefs and seagrass beds are home to a variety of marine life - rays, eels, the invasive lionfish, and Aruba is home to four species of sea-turtles, which we consistently enjoy seeing!

Aruba is furthermore well-known for wreck-diving, and one of our dives involved exploring a shipwreck, where we were truly fortunate to witness a nesting octopus within one of the wreck's former portholes!

For our two-tank dive, we availed ourselves of Jads Dive Center, a PADI 5-star IDC resort.

Rum tasting at Pepe Margo Distillery

The Pepe Margo Distillery is Aruba's first ever craft distillery, and it is located in a fully restored traditional Aruban home within the historical district of downtown Aruba.

The distillery's name stems from one of the home's former residents, Catarina Margarita (Margo) Arends, who was dubbed ‘Pepe Margo,' (‘pepe' meaning godmother in the Papiamento language) by the local community.

Pepe Margo Distillery provides distillery tours, during which you will find them producing rum, gin, and more, on-site at the historic house, and of course - savoring the spirits themselves!

Being gin aficionados, we thoroughly enjoyed what we tasted!

You can find further details regarding the distillery's history and schedule your own tour via their website.

Island Jeep Tour with Isla Aruba

Our island jeep tour was one of our most memorable experiences on the island and was the most exceptional method for us to grasp how diverse and magnificent the island of Aruba is.

Isla Aruba jeep tours are led by locals, possessing extensive knowledge and firsthand experience of what Aruba has to offer visitors - both the well-known tourist spots along with the hidden gems that are off the beaten path.

The off-road safari jeeps offered a genuinely cool and unique method of traversing the island, and the perfect choice of vehicle for when we were traversing the rugged landscape of Arikok National Park!

Isla Aruba offers a range of tours, each of which is private, ensuring you check off the popular attractions, but also providing the option of a fully customized private tour, which they can assist with customizing and creating for you.

Popular attractions that Isla Aruba will escort you to encompass:

Gold Mill Ruins: Uncover the history of gold mining in the area and investigate the ruins of a historical former gold mill. Arikok National Park - inclusive of the Natural Pool, Fontein Cave, and Quadirikiri Cave Various beaches throughout the island - along with the lovely Baby Beach - more on Baby Beach below!

Wine tour at Alto Vista Winery

We love a wine tour and similarly enjoy drinking wine - thus, this was an ideal activity selection for us while on the island, and also something we truthfully were not anticipating finding!

Alto Vista Winery is the first and only boutique winery on the island, and is an estate winery, implying that the wines are produced using grapes cultivated on its own vineyard - quite an impressive feat considering the island's arid climate!

The wine tour at Alto Vista is somewhat distinct from the norm - instead of going directly indoors to the production site and the distillery, the tour commences by walking through the farm itself - including across the natural terrain of what the farm used to be before the vineyards were planted, and then we traversed through the vineyards themselves.

We then explored the distillery, where Alto Vista also produces rum, which we sampled prior to concluding in the winery and the tasting room, which we were unquestionably prepared for. The wine tasting comprises sampling the five wines they produce and also includes a small charcuterie snack platter to be paired with the wines.

This was definitively a highlight!

Read more about Alto Vista and schedule your personal wine tour on their website.

Embark on a luxury sailing cruise with Pelican Adventures

We are absolutely fond of a boat trip! And, when in the Caribbean, how could we abstain - sailing on crystal clear waters, a tropical sea breeze, a Caribbean cocktail in hand, music, the opportunity to swim and snorkel - this is a must-do for anyone visiting Aruba!

We traveled with Pelican Adventures, who manage a number of different sailing and snorkeling excursions, however, we cherished the half-day Monforte Luxury Cruise, aboard their luxurious schooner ship.

We sailed towards the southern coast of the island, passing the gorgeous Eagle Beach, down to the crystalline waters of the Spanish Lagoon, where we spent a couple of hours anchored to enjoy swimming, snorkeling the reef, and lunch onboard.

This was an absolutely flawless way to spend a day. Our cruise included:

A 5-hour cruise to the Spanish Lagoon Open bar onboard, including hand-crafted cocktails Lunch grilled on board Snorkeling the Spanish Lagoon Barrier Reef Rope swinging from the boat into the sea

Try glass blowing at Studio Murano Art

Studio Murano Art represents a family-run glass-blowing studio - in fact, their present master artisan constitutes the third generation!

Each day, they present a complimentary glass-blowing demonstration from 10:00-13:00, therefore, visitors within the vicinity who may have solely stopped for a bite at the on-site bar and restaurant, or to browse the store, can actually enjoy the glass-blowing process, from beginning to end.

Nevertheless, in the event that you genuinely wish to attempt this for yourself, Studio Murano Art offers workshops - a hands-on experience where you can fashion your own, one-of-a-kind glass item. The lesson is instructed by the expert possessing over 35 years of experience in glass blowing!

Of course, we had to give this a go ourselves - wherein we each fashioned a small glass bird of our own, currently displayed on our living room windowsill!

Get Up Close with Flamingos on Renaissance Island

Carry out a Google image search for ‘Aruba', and it's practically certain that over half of the top outcomes will be sourced from Flamingo Beach, on Renaissance Island - showcasing the elegant pink birds walking on the powdery white sands, with the backdrop of palm trees and the azure sea.

Visiting these residents of Renaissance Island is one of the most popular tourist attractions for numerous people, and after experiencing it ourselves, we comprehend the appeal.

Unlike its neighbors, Bonaire and Curaçao, Aruba has no wild flamingos, therefore, the flamingos residing on Renaissance Island are captive flamingos from Bonaire - although they enjoy complete freedom throughout the island and are completely comfortable with the tourists visiting each day!

You can even acquire flamingo food on the island, the most effective technique to coax the birds to approach you closely for that flawless Instagram shot. We were deeply thankful for the opportunity to do this - and our top tip is to head over with the first water taxi of the day, when the flamingos are still hungry!

Nonetheless, the island is not exclusively about the flamingos - it constitutes a day out in its own right. There are two beaches on the island - Flamingo Beach, naturally, which is an adult-only beach and possesses cabanas available for rent, along with Iguana Beach, which is family-friendly. These beaches are actually the only private beaches found within Aruba.

There's a spa onsite, uniquely located on a pier above the water. You can stroll through the mangroves, relish a meal at the on-island bar and grill, or simply sit at the beach bar admiring the vistas. It's a tropical island paradise, distanced from the main island itself.

It is critical to note, however, that Renaissance Island is a private island. Visiting is technically only available to guests of the Renaissance hotel, and thus, if you aim to ensure an opportunity to visit, the best method is to reserve an overnight stay at the hotel. Due to its popularity as an attraction, the majority of visitors to Aruba reserve at least a one-night stay at either the beginning or end of their vacation to ensure they have a chance to go.

Given this, and when hotel occupancy is low, they do offer a day pass to non-residents, so it always is beneficial to email or double-check with the hotel directly to ascertain if this option is available, as we highly suggest visiting.

Should a day pass be available, these are approximately $130 per person, which encompasses a food and beverage credit of $25 to be used at Papagayo Bar and Grill, or the Mangrove Beach Bar.

You can utilize this website here to verify if any day passes are available.

Gay Hotels in Aruba

Given that it is such an LGBTQ+ friendly island for tourists, you will be greeted with open arms at nearly any of the island's many accommodations.

We've listed the following as gay-friendly hotels in Aruba, predicated upon our personal experiences residing there and the degree of comfort and welcome we felt.

Gay Friendly Hotels in Aruba

Courtyard by Marriott Aruba Resort

We spent our initial four nights in Aruba at the breathtaking Courtyard Aruba Resort, and what a welcome to the island!

Courtyard Aruba Resort is a beautiful property, with the rooms and suites positioned within low-rise, two-story white-washed units constructed around two beautiful lagoon-style pools - one including a swim-up bar.

The hotel is positioned at the center of Palm Beach, walking distance to both the beach itself and the Palm Beach Strip, comprising various shops, bars, casinos, and restaurants. The hotel also offers a shuttle service to nearby Palm Beach, where there is a designated area featuring sun loungers and umbrellas for hotel guests.

There's also a 24-hour fitness gym on-site, which we leveraged daily, owing to the jet lag triggering us to awaken at 5 am! But it was an excellent way to stimulate an appetite for the complimentary breakfast buffet each morning!

We had a delightful afternoon relaxing in the cabana following our morning hike around the national park!

There are also two on-site restaurants at the Hyatt - Palms Beachside Grill for breakfast and lunch, and the Ruinas del Mar a la carte restaurant for dinner, which specializes in seafood and fresh fish. We had a wonderful meal here - subsequent to savoring multiple cocktails and observing the remarkable Aruban sunset at the Alfresco cocktail bar, naturally!

Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort

The Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort is comprised of two properties - the adult-only Renaissance Marina Hotel, and the family-friendly Renaissance Ocean Suites.

The two hotels are only about a five-minute walk from each other, situated on opposite sides of the marina, although both properties are located at the center of downtown Oranjestad, the vibrant island capital.

You can effortlessly saunter along the boardwalk adjacent to the marina, appreciating the luxurious yachts, or stroll into the city center, where you will find remarkable bars, restaurants, and shops. The Renaissance Marina hotel even backs onto Renaissance Mall - home to some high-end designer outlets!

The adults-only property presents a beautiful pool, an on-site spa, and a casino, and many of their rooms offer an incredible ocean view.

The amenities of the Ocean Suites are also accessible to guests of the Marina. We enjoyed a very laid-back afternoon at the man-made beach lagoon, enjoying cocktails!

However, despite both properties being magnificent in their own right, the primary highlight of the Renaissance Aruba Resort has to be Renaissance Island - the 40-acre private island, home to the captivating Flamingo Beach, as we referenced above.

Radisson Blu

Radisson Blu Aruba was the ideal hotel to spend our final few nights in Aruba. Positioned at the end of the Palm Beach Strip, there's a wealth of activities available in the adjacent area.

The hotel is within walking distance of numerous restaurants, shops, and bars, along with being walking distance to the beach itself. But should you require it, there is a complimentary beach shuttle.

Radisson Blu Aruba also boasts multiple pools to select from - a large, lagoon-style, free-form pool surrounded by the garden, a smaller, family-friendly kids' pool, a highly spacious hot tub, and our personal favorite - the adults-only rooftop infinity pool with unparalleled vistas of the ocean and the neighboring islands!

During our final night on the island, we additionally indulged in one of the best meals we'd experienced on the island, at the on-site restaurant, Senses Fine Dining, where we sampled a variety of dishes from the 8-course Chef's Table menu with a wine pairing - discover more about Senses below!

Bucuti and Tara Beach Resort

Although we didn't actually stay here during our visit, we've included Bucuti and Tara Beach Resort as a gay-friendly hotel owing to the fact that it's an adult-only property - commonly a significant selling point when gay couples are seeking accommodations!

Bucuti and Tara Beach Resort is situated on the award-winning Eagle Beach, which also often turns out to be the most sought-after selection for gay travelers.

This boutique resort is tailored for guests aged 18 and over and encompasses an oceanfront restaurant featuring incredible sea views, along with a fitness center, spa, and, undeniably, a beautiful pool area.

The hotel also presents a complimentary movie night on the beach twice a week for hotel guests.

Gay Bars in Aruba

Despite being a compact island, there's a gay bar / nightclub in Aruba - Cage Night Club!

Cage Nightclub operates from Thursday to Saturday, and while it's intimate, it is an authentic local bar that truly comes alive with happy hours, entertainment, top-class drag shows, and metamorphoses into a lively dance club on weekends!

Address: King Plaza Mall, Calla Harmonia, Oranjestad, Aruba

Aruba Gay Beach

Aruba doesn't technically possess its own gay beach, or even an official gay section of a beach, as one might encounter in larger, mass-tourist destinations - Miami, Puerto Vallarta, and the like.

Nonetheless, Eagle Beach tends to be the most favored beach for gay travelers, and while it doesn't have an official gay section per se, you are likely to identify a specific portion of the beach where gay individuals assemble.

As we continually suggest - take a leisurely stroll up and down until you observe the gay couples in their speedos, and subsequently, select your spot!

Furthermore, although we haven't witnessed it ourselves - we've viewed images of a pride flag being flown on Eagle Beach, hence, you can never be certain!

Eagle Beach consistently ranks among the world's top ten beaches and represents the best beach in the Caribbean, hence, it's hardly surprising that this will be the beach of choice for gay travelers. It's breathtaking!

Other Beaches Worth a Mention

Baby Beach was, without a doubt, our absolute favorite beach on the entire island! It was just stunning - no other term could adequately capture it!

Baby Beach is somewhat off the beaten path, located at the southernmost tip of the island, adjacent to the quaint town of San Nicolas, and is approximately a 45-minute drive from the hotel zone; nonetheless, it is a worthwhile journey to get here.

Baby Beach is a beautiful, half-moon-shaped sandy cove/lagoon, possessing crystal-clear shallow waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The excellent aspect is, being that little further out, it generally attracts more local families as opposed to being overrun with tourists!

We visited Baby Beach as a stop on our island jeep tour, and only wished we could have stayed longer, yet it proved a fantastic way to get here and, at a minimum, tick it off. You are, naturally, at liberty to take a taxi, or even use the local buses.

Places to Eat in Aruba

CAYA House Restaurant

Caya House is positioned in Palm Beach, literally across the road from the Hyatt Regency hotel, and is situated inside a fully renovated, traditional Aruban house.

The setting is beautiful - as well as the indoor, modern dining room, the restaurant also presents an outdoor courtyard for open-air dining.

Caya is not solely a restaurant - they also offer entertainment, such as live performances, or featuring a DJ on weekends.

The menu showcases authentic Aruban cuisine, with numerous fish and seafood options.

Address: J.E. Irausquin Blvd 372, Noord, Aruba

Olivia Mediterranean Restaurant

Olivia is an authentic Mediterranean restaurant situated in downtown Oranjestad.

The menu boasts a true blend of Mediterranean cuisine, with dishes inspired from Greece, Italy, Morocco, and Lebanon...we were spoiled for options!

The courtyard setting was furthermore very trendy and romantic!

Address: Wilhelminastraat 74, lokaal 2 Oranjestad, Aruba, Aruba

Azia Restaurant and Lounge

Azia Restaurant and Lounge is a beautiful, elegant restaurant that, as its name suggests, specializes in Asian cuisine - think dim sum, sushi, and, naturally, being a restaurant on an island, some amazing seafood choices.

The décor inside was incredible; we truly felt as though we were in a restaurant in the Far East. The food was absolutely delicious - complemented by some specialty cocktails, it constituted one of our preferred meals on the island.

Highly recommend the lychee martini!

Address: Piazza, J.E. Irausquin Blvd 348, Palm Beach, Aruba

Papiamento

Papiamento is one of the most high-end restaurants on the island, located within a historic Aruban house.

The setting of the restaurant spans within the house itself, along with tables set within the lush, tropical gardens by the pool, for a stunning al fresco dining experience.

The menu is typical Aruban cuisine - meat and seafood dishes cooked in clay pots, fresh fish, steak - everything we had was scrumptious!

Address: Washington 61, Noord, Aruba

Senses Fine Dining Aruba

Senses Fine Dining is an award-winning restaurant, located inside the Radisson Blu hotel at Palm Beach. It is held in such high regard that, in 2022, it was actually designated the 2 best fine-dining restaurant in the entire Caribbean!

We dined here on our final night on the island, and had one of the best meals we have ever had. The restaurant serves à la carte, yet is more widely known for their chef's table experience, composed of eight courses, in addition to a welcome glass of prosecco.

Address:

Address: J.E. Irausquin Blvd 97-A, Noord, Aruba

Faro Blanco

The food here was outstanding - however, what truly sold this restaurant was the phenomenal location!

Faro Blanco Restaurant is situated adjacent to the lighthouse, in the former residence of the lighthouse keeper, and being atop a cliff top, we dined with the most breathtaking sea views.

We went for lunch, on a perfectly clear day, and enjoyed vistas across both the island and out to the sea; we could scarcely focus on eating, as we simply desired to admire the scenery! We could only envision how it might be dining there at sunset!

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and specializes in Italian cuisine, with a variety of pizza and pasta options.

Address: California Lighthouse Z/N, Noord, Aruba

West Deck, Beach Bar and Island Grill

West Deck is located mere minutes from central Oranjestad. Open for both lunch and dinner, the setting is everything - the restaurant itself is constructed on a sizable wooden deck over the beach itself, right by the water's edge, and all tables possess the most incredible sea views.

This constitutes a casual and informal venue - and, though clearly a popular choice with both locals and tourists, the setting is very tranquil, owing to its authentic Caribbean atmosphere.

This represents the perfect location to savor typical Caribbean cuisine, a local beer or rum cocktail, and relish the views.

Address: Lloyd G. Smith Blvd, Oranjestad, Aruba

Huchada

Huchada is a friendly neighborhood bakery & lunchroom situated in the center of the island.

We made a stop here for a local breakfast to fuel up before our hike in Arikok National Park, and cherished how local it was!

Situated within a traditional Cunucu Aruban house, the vibe within was exceptionally authentic. Locals were seated, drinking coffee alongside their friends and family, schoolchildren were having breakfast, and aside from us, there were no other tourists in sight!

Huchada provides sandwiches, fresh juices, cakes, and sweets and, naturally - pastechi, the local specialty. Pastechi are a traditional Aruban breakfast or snack, and are crescent-shaped, deep-fried savory pastries with a filling. We sampled both the chicken and the meat variants; they are delightful!

Address: 4 328, Santa Cruz, Aruba

Practical tips for visiting Aruba

Aruba enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures seldom dropping below 25°C - so, pack ample beachwear and high SPF sun lotion! The local currency is the Aruban Florin; however, US dollars are widely accepted. The official main language on the island is Papiamento, although Dutch and English are also widely spoken. There are A LOT of mosquitoes on the island - ensure you pack bug spray, and for evenings, long sleeves and trousers are advisable, especially with many restaurants offering open-air dining. The tap water is perfectly safe to drink. Power outlets are identical to those in the US and Canada, thus, make sure you bring an adaptor.

Wrap Up
