Furthermore, New York stands as one of the cities with the highest LGBTQ+ populations in the entire United States. The challenge, however, can occasionally be feeling overwhelmed, particularly if this marks your initial experience visiting the metropolis. We certainly experienced that sentiment during our inaugural visit here. It can feel as though there is an abundance of activities and insufficient time… where does one even commence?

Presented below is a compilation of the leading gay venues in NYC, catering to both newcomers and experienced patrons of the scene! And the most advantageous aspect… the majority of them are situated on the west side, either within the West Village, Chelsea, or Hell's Kitchen districts, meaning that, depending on the duration of your stay, you could very well traverse between them and patronize most, if not all, of them!

Please be advised that the renowned Rebar in Chelsea ceased operations permanently in the year 2020.

1. The Stonewall Inn

This significant NYC gay historical site is recognized as the origin point of the contemporary gay rights movement back in 1969. A favored spot for both tourists and local residents, it's hardly surprising that the clientele exhibits diversity in age, gender identity, and geographic origin. You will encounter individuals from every corner of the globe within this particular gay establishment.

The ambiance is truly remarkable, and the personnel are exceptionally amiable. It is considered an institution and a necessary experience, particularly for those visiting New York City for the very first time. Moreover, the Stonewall National Monument and Christopher Park are conveniently located directly across the street, serving as commemorations of the Stonewall riots' location. To put it succinctly, the genesis of New York Pride originated right here!

Situated at 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, The Stonewall Inn welcomes patrons daily from 2 PM to 11 PM.

2. The Eagle

Boasting a profound heritage that spans several decades, The Eagle has transformed into a celebrated landmark that has both lauded and contributed to the advancement and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community. While The Stonewall Inn is widely recognized, did you realize that Julius' holds the distinction of being New York City's longest continually operating gay bar? Julius not only offers expertly crafted cocktails but also serves some of the most delicious burgers prepared on an authentic, old-school grill.

The interior design is unpretentious, yet you might recognize it, as it has made appearances in a multitude of films and television series, including 'The Boys in the Band,' 'Can You Ever Forgive Me?,' and 'Pose,' to mention just a few notable examples.

Julius' is situated in Greenwich Village at 159 West 10th Street and is accessible from Tuesday through Friday between 2 PM and 10 PM, and on weekends from midday until 10 PM.

4. Pieces Bar

From sophisticated drag performances featuring amusing queens to themed underwear parties, Pieces stands out as one of the premier gay establishments in New York City for forging unforgettable memories. The clientele is remarkably varied, and it's unsurprising that weekend evenings are the most sought-after times to visit. Be sure to partake in their popular "liquid brunch" offered on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Pieces is located at 8 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village and operates daily from 2 PM until 4 AM.

5. Rise Bar

Rise Bar is situated in Hell's Kitchen at 859 9th Avenue. It is open on Sundays from 3 PM to 2 AM, from 4 PM to 2 AM on Monday through Thursday, and from 3 PM to 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

6. Industry Bar

Industry distinguishes itself as the sole gay bar and nightclub on this list featuring a dance floor of a considerable size. It is also acclaimed for hosting some of the most impressive drag performances; you can visit any night of the week and have a wonderful time while witnessing exceptional talent. The patrons tend to be on the younger side, making it an ideal destination for those who wish to dance the night away.

Industry is located in Hell's Kitchen at 355 West 52nd Street and is operational every day from 6 PM until 11 PM.

7. Flaming Saddles

Among the more distinctive establishments, this wild-west-themed gay bar ingeniously merges country music with gay dance party vibes - the bartenders frequently ascend the bar tops to perform dances to a diverse selection of country and top 40 hits. They are also known to playfully pour shots directly into patrons' mouths, so be sure to stay close to the bar!

All this is to say that this venue possesses an incredibly lively and memorable atmosphere. It even features a jukebox, ensuring that your favorite tunes can be played!

Flaming Saddles, also situated in Hell's Kitchen, can be found at 793 9th Avenue. It operates from 3 PM to 4 AM on Mondays through Fridays, and from 2 PM to 4 AM on weekends.

8. Ritz Bar and Lounge

The Ritz is strategically located on Restaurant Row in Hell's Kitchen. Upon initial entry, it presents as a rather unassuming, narrow bar. However, venturing further towards the rear or upstairs will reveal a packed dance floor. While the crowd tends to be more heterogeneous, the prevailing ambiance is remarkably laid-back and welcoming.

The Ritz Bar and Lounge is located in Hell's Kitchen at 369 West 46th Street. It is open from Monday to Saturday between 4 PM and 4 AM, and on Sundays from 4 PM until 10 PM.

9. Club Cumming

Club Cumming bears the name of its proprietor, the acclaimed bisexual actor Alan Cumming, whom you might recognize from films like 'Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion,' 'Goldeneye,' and 'Eyes Wide Shut.' He now presides over a spectacularly entertaining gay club that consistently showcases performers specializing in burlesque, drag, or cabaret, hosts viewing parties for RuPaul's Drag Race, features DJs spinning tracks, and offers other diverse events such as knitting nights!

Club Cumming is located at 505 East 6th Street on the Lower East Side and is open daily from 5:30 PM until 4 AM.

10. Henrietta Hudson

This establishment, owned and operated by lesbians, serves as the ultimate gathering place for the lesbian community and their gay-friendly allies, with the added benefit of being open year-round. They have garnered numerous accolades, including awards for Best Lesbian Bar, Best Bartenders, Best Latin Party, and Best DJs, among others!

Henrietta Hudson is situated in the West Village at 438 Hudson Street. It is accessible every day from 5 PM, closing at either 2 AM or 4 AM, with the exception of Mondays when it closes at midnight.

11. The Monster Bar

From its inception in the early nineteen-sixties, The Monster Bar has consistently been a pioneering force in the city's queer nightlife landscape. Established during a period when LGBTQ+ gathering spaces were often discreet or clandestine, The Monster provided a secure sanctuary for individuals to congregate, celebrate, and find acceptance. Its historical walls have borne witness to the evolution of LGBTQ+ rights and visibility, positioning it not merely as a bar but as a living testament to the community's transformative journey.

Inside, you will discover a multi-tiered gay sanctuary adorned with a distinctive mirrored staircase, presided over by antique Lalique chandeliers. A circular piano bar graces the ground floor, while an accompanying nightclub resides beneath; it is even rumored that LGBTQ+ icons such as Andy Warhol and RuPaul have graced this illustrious locale with their presence.

The Monster Bar is located at 80 Grove Street in Greenwich Village. It operates from Monday to Friday between 4 PM and 4 AM, and on weekends from 3 PM until 4 AM.

12. Hush HK

Occupying the former premises of Therapy, directly opposite Industry Bar, Hush HK ranks among the more recently established gay bars in New York City. Despite its youth, having opened its doors in 2021, Hush has already solidified its reputation as a premier gay entertainment destination in Hell's Kitchen.

Hush is operational seven days a week, offering an array of artisanal cocktails and captivating drag performances; furthermore, it hosts energetic parties from Wednesday through Sunday. Wednesday evenings feature the "Commando Party," Thursdays are dedicated to a Latin-themed night, Fridays alternate between house pop music or NSFW fetish nights, followed by "Shush Saturdays" and "Sunday Night Live."

Hush is located at 348 West 52nd Street in Hell's Kitchen. It is open Monday through Wednesday from 5 PM to 2 AM, on Thursdays and Fridays from 5 PM to 4 AM, and on weekends from 3 PM to 4 AM.

13. Barracuda Lounge

Oh, Barracuda! This iconic gay lounge has been thriving since 1995 and is widely acknowledged as the birthplace of the legendary "Star Search" - a bar competition believed to have inspired RuPaul's Drag Race.

Barracuda also pioneered a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere compared to other gay establishments in New York at its opening. The primary focus here is on entertainment, featuring nightly drag shows and frequent promotional events for Broadway productions. For enthusiasts of 'Sex and the City,' the specific episode where Stanford initially ventures into a gay bar (requiring him to strip down to his underwear to gain entry) was indeed filmed at Barracuda.

Barracuda is situated at 275 West 22nd Street in Chelsea and maintains operating hours daily from 6 PM until 4 AM.

14. Gym Sports Bar

There exists a substantial segment of the gay male population that enjoys sports and "masculine" pursuits such as playing pool or consuming beverages, comparable to those who appreciate aesthetic grooming and dancing. Naturally, many individuals find enjoyment in both aspects! For those seeking a sports bar where they can view their preferred games without being exclusively surrounded by heterosexual patrons, Gym Sports Bar presents itself as an ideal option.

This sports-oriented venue also has branches in Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale, while its New York counterpart is a casual establishment that also holds the distinction of being the city's inaugural gay sports bar. Consequently, if you are in search of a venue to watch the latest sporting events and engage in discussions about fantasy football with fellow gay men, this is certainly the place to be!

Gym Sports Bar is located at 167 8th Avenue in Chelsea. It opens its doors on weekdays at 4 PM and on weekends at 1 PM. The establishment concludes service at 2 AM from Sunday through Thursday, remaining open until 4 AM on both Friday and Saturday nights.

15. Boxers NYC

While Gym might have been the first gay sports bar to commence operations in New York, it is by no means the solitary establishment of its kind anymore. Boxers NYC is another gay sports bar boasting two distinct locations, one in Chelsea and another in Hell's Kitchen. This venue offers an excellent setting for watching sports while indulging in wood-fired pizza, and it also provides the opportunity to observe the attractive staff in their signature boxer shorts!

Boxers NYC is situated in Chelsea at 37 West 20th Street, and Boxers HK can be found in Hell's Kitchen at 735 9th Avenue. Both locations are open Monday through Thursday from 4 PM to 2 AM, on Fridays from 4 PM to 4 AM, Saturdays from 1 PM to 4 AM, and Sundays from 1 PM to 2 AM.

16. The Dickens

For individuals who favor a more sophisticated bar environment, The Dickens unquestionably stands out as one of the most upscale and glamorous gay establishments we have encountered! This is a genuinely unique venue, diverging from typical dive bars or clubs, offering instead a literary-themed space suitable for dining, imbibing, and dancing.

It derives its name from Charles Dickens, owing to the theory that many of his characters possessed a queer sensibility, and the bar features delightful homages to the author, including a staircase adorned with first-edition Dickens covers rendered in the vibrant colors of the pride flag. Venture here for an exquisite meal in the restaurant, savor a cocktail in the sumptuously decorated Genie's Lounge, then explore the two additional bars and the rooftop area.

The Dickens is located at 783 8th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen and operates from 4 PM to 2 AM on Mondays through Fridays, and from 1 PM to 2 AM on weekends.

17. Ty's Bar

Ty's represents another classic gay bar that has been under gay ownership and management since its inauguration in 1972. This establishment has consistently catered, and continues to do so, primarily to the bear, leather, and Levi's community, although it warmly welcomes all patrons. A delightful and convivial evening is invariably assured here, and Ty's also proudly serves as the official headquarters for the Empire City Motorcycle Club - the nation's longest-standing continuously active gay motorcycle club.

Ty's Bar is located at 114 Christopher Street in the West Village (just a short distance from The Stonewall Inn) and is open daily starting at 2 PM. It closes at 2 AM from Sunday to Wednesday, at 3 AM on Thursdays, and at 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

18. The Hangar Bar

Another prominent gay establishment situated on the renowned Christopher Street is The Hangar Bar, a locale where men from all walks of life converge, interact, socialize, and engage in cruising. Indeed, this is one of those particular types of gay bars where the restrooms experience considerable activity (if you catch our drift), and you are almost certain to forge new connections. The venue offers an abundance of excellent music and reasonably priced beverages, complemented by a highly alluring atmosphere. Therefore, if you are seeking an unpretentious setting to encounter genuinely friendly gay men, make your way over to The Hangar.

The Hangar Bar is located at 115 Christopher Street, directly across the street from Ty's Bar. It is operational every day from 3 PM until 4 AM, with slightly earlier opening times of 2 PM on Saturdays and 1 PM on Sundays.

19. FLEX

With a name like Flex, one does not require an overly active imagination to surmise the demographic that frequents this particular gay establishment! This bar is situated in the former location of the Posh gay bar, but it has undergone a complete renovation and now features some truly eye-catching artwork, including a hand-sculpted mural depicting shirtless gay bikers by the local artist Jo Mar.

The prevailing ethos at Flex is encapsulated by their motto: "Come on your lonesome and meet friends, or come with friends and make more friends," and this sentiment truly defines the atmosphere. Be sure to also pop in next door to the Ben & Jerry's Scoop Store (managed by the same proprietors of Flex) for some delightful ice cream!

Flex is located in Hell's Kitchen at 405 West 51st Street. It is open Monday through Thursday from 4 PM to 2 AM, on Fridays from 4 PM to 4 AM, Saturdays from 3 PM to 4 AM, and Sundays from 3 PM to 2 AM.

20. The Townhouse of New York

Should your preference lean towards an elegant piano bar experience within New York City, but with a gay focus, then direct your attention to The Townhouse of New York. This is a sophisticated gay men's club where members of the professional community convene to socialize and enjoy refreshments accompanied by exquisite piano performances. While many patrons are often attired in business suits, having come directly from work, there is no mandatory blazer requirement; however, it is advisable to dress with a degree of polish, as this is certainly not a casual dive bar.

The Townhouse of New York is located at 236 East 58th Street on the East Side. It is open daily from 4 PM to 2 AM, extending to 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

21. Lips

Although this venue is less of a bar and more of a drag dining spectacle, it remains an absolutely essential destination during your visit to New York! Lips is a legendary drag show palace that has been serving up glamorous performances for close to three decades, establishing itself as one of the premier venues for an uproariously funny dinner or brunch experience. Diverse shows are presented six nights a week, with themes ranging from karaoke to glitz and glamour, or even Twisted Broadway. This undoubtedly represents one of the most enjoyable ways to commence a night out in gay NYC, or to recuperate from a previous evening during their weekend brunch show…

Lips is located at 227 East 56th Street and welcomes patrons from Tuesday to Sunday evenings starting at 7 PM for dinner and drag performances, as well as on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 PM for brunch.

22. Big Booty Bread Co.

Alright, alright, while this is not precisely a gay bar, its exceptionally amusing name compelled us to include it! Big Booty Bread Co. boasts arguably the most entertaining moniker for a bakery, and the delectable baked goods offered here are simply divine. Furthermore, you can purchase merchandise bearing the slogan "I <3 Big Booty" to take home as a memento of your wonderful time in New York.

Big Booty Bread Co. can be found at 261 West 23rd Street in Chelsea and is open from Monday to Saturday between 8:30 AM and 7:30 PM, and on Sundays starting at 10 AM.
