Diana Ross and the Gay Community
Diana Ross Reportedly Failed to Grasp the LGBTQ Significance of &8220;I&8217;m Coming Out&8221;
It has been asserted by the renowned musician and producer Nile Rodgers that Diana Ross, the iconic vocalist, did not comprehend the LGBTQ+ connotations inherent in her acclaimed 1980 release, &8220;I&8217;m Coming Out.&8221;
Rodgers, who collaborated on the song's composition and production alongside Bernard Edwards, informed the New York Post that Ms. Ross had not discerned the link between the track and the act of individuals revealing their homosexual identity.
Although Ross evidently adored the lyrical content, Rodgers conveyed that she had not understood that it possessed an LGBTQ+ connotation, specifically representing an individual's public declaration of 'coming out of the closet.' He noted that this understanding completely escaped her.
Ultimately, the song&8217;s true underlying meaning became clear to Ross, according to Rodgers, when radio personality Frankie Crocker interpreted &8220;I&8217;m Coming Out&8221; as an announcement of Diana's own homosexual identity.
The celebrated vocalist, it is reported, made her way back to the recording studio, visibly distressed and weeping, then vehemently inquired why Rodgers had purportedly sought to jeopardize her professional standing.
She was eventually persuaded to persist in performing and advocating for the LGBTQ+ anthem, as Rodgers successfully convinced her of its utility as an excellent means of self-introduction during her live performances.
Rodgers conveyed that he had told Diana that the song was intended to serve as her personal 'coming-out' anthem, adding that he and his collaborators regarded her as "our black queen." He then explained that he had even devised a horn fanfare for it, likening its ceremonial use to the playing of 'Hail to the Chief' when the president makes an appearance.
The founding member of Chic, moreover, provided additional elucidation regarding the LGBTQ+ origins that underpin the musical composition.
Rodgers disclosed that he had conceptualized the &8220;I&8217;m Coming Out&8221; refrain subsequent to his visit to GG&8217;s Barnum Room, an establishment catering to transgender individuals, located in Manhattan.
Rodgers recounted encountering a collective of Ross impersonators within the restroom, which triggered a sudden realization for him.
He proceeded to explain that he was compelled to leave the premises and contact Bernard from a public telephone booth. He further instructed Bernard to transcribe the phrase &8216;I'm coming out,&8217; after which he elucidated the circumstances to him.
