610-Pound Squat for Adam Gay Highlights Night of Champions XVIII
The initial Spring Ball strategy implemented by Coach Gonzales proved effective. Notably, New Mexico became the inaugural Division I FBS squad to commence Spring Practice, concluding the program on the twelfth of March, precisely when UNM's Spring Break commenced. This arrangement facilitated seven successive weeks of intensive strength conditioning, an essential requirement given the newly appointed strength personnel; indeed, it has undeniably yielded positive outcomes. To date, during this spring period, twenty-two athletes have achieved a clean lift of three hundred pounds or greater. As pointed out by Gonzales, while this figure does not establish a new record (the previous peak being forty-one in the early two thousands under Rocky Long's tenure), it nonetheless represents an improvement, and its upward trajectory is expected to persist.
A distinguishing characteristic of the eighteenth Night of Champions was its undeniable status as a significant spectacle. The broadcast, originating live from the weight room, featured Nunley and Slow, with Robert Portnoy, DonTrell Moore, and Kole McKamey also participating. Consequently, this evolved into a three-hour radio discussion focused on Lobo Football, with Gonzales, Baker, and Jerrick Reed II contributing to the dialogue. Remarkably, even members of the audience who called in became involved, exemplified by Hank Baskett's participation during the initial hour of the broadcast, where he exchanged anecdotes with his erstwhile teammates.
Nevertheless, the true competitive activity commenced at six o'clock with the clean lift. OJ Bartley surpassed his desired weight of two hundred ninety-five pounds on four occasions, ultimately completing a lift of three hundred thirty-five pounds; this accomplishment was matched by Dennis Hayden, the squad's recently acquired running back, who successfully reached the same benchmark thrice. In total, eight Lobos set new personal records (PRs) a dozen times, while on seven separate instances, they equaled their existing PRs, resulting in an astonishing nineteen peak performances, thereby exceeding last year's comprehensive tally of eighteen. This significantly boosted the event's momentum, though it was, surprisingly, one of the more diminutive Lobos who virtually captivated the audience. Luke Wysong, widely recognized as among the league's swiftest athletes, could now credibly contend for the title of pound-for-pound strongest. Wysong, weighing a hundred and seventy pounds, executed a clean lift of three hundred twenty-five pounds, nearly doubling his body mass. Indeed, he became the initial Lobo to exceed the three hundred-pound threshold during the evening's competition.
Regarding the bench press, a year subsequent to no Lobo achieving the impressive four hundred-pound milestone and merely one surpassing three hundred thirty-five pounds, three athletes managed lifts of three hundred ninety pounds or superior. Dion Hunter successfully pressed three hundred ninety pounds, Alec Morenco achieved three hundred ninety-five, and Vincent Santos reached four hundred five pounds, thereby establishing the preeminent performance in this particular discipline for the evening. Nevertheless, collective attention subsequently shifted to the squat, the segment where the genuinely significant weightlifting occurred. It was during this event that Gay surpassed his previous NOCXVII benchmark of five hundred sixty-five pounds, achieving five hundred sixty-five on his initial attempt, then five hundred ninety-five on the subsequent one, and finally, six hundred ten pounds—a figure, coincidentally, identical to KNML's AM call signal, which provided live coverage for the majority of the contest.
During the previous year, Gay had been accompanied at the five hundred sixty-five pound mark by Bryce Santana; however, this year Bryce progressed beyond that point, executing a successful squat of five hundred seventy-five pounds, a feat accomplished before a substantial gathering of relatives and advocates who had traveled from Los Lunas.
Gonzales articulated, 'I am immensely proud of these young men; they have exerted tremendous effort. Nonetheless, the task remains incomplete, and should our objective be to secure that fifth conference championship, their commitment to daily perseverance and struggle must remain unwavering.'
