Kaytranada Expresses Gratitude to Freddie Gibbs for Acceptance of Sexuality: A Source of Hope
Kaytranada publicly acknowledges his appreciation for Freddie Gibbs.
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, the esteemed Montreal DJ and producer conveyed that Gibbs was among the first peers who readily accepted his sexuality. Kaytranada's openly gay identity was first revealed in a 2016 The Fader interview, preceding the release of his debut album, 99.9%.
'Many people remain unaware of my sexual orientation, even given this disclosure,' he remarked. 'However, Freddie Gibbs was undeniably one of the earliest artists to express unwavering support, stating, ‘I'm proud of you, man, keep doing your thing.' This profound affirmation was incredibly encouraging and instilled a sense of hope within me.'
'The acceptance of LGBTQ+ artists, including rappers like Lil Nas X and numerous R&B artists, is now more prevalent,' Kaytranada continued. 'This evolving social landscape is truly remarkable. It's quite remarkable to observe Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre performing at Pride in L.A., signifying the progress made.'
Freddie Gibbs acknowledged Kaytranada's comments on X, responding, 'That's my real-life homies though.'
These two artists are longstanding collaborators, having previously crafted musical masterpieces such as 'My Dope House' and 'Alexys,' alongside the KAYTRAMINÉ album track, 'letstalkaboutit.'
During the 2016 Fader interview, Kaytranada recounted disclosing his bisexuality to his family at age 16, a topic which never received further discussion.
'A multitude of emotions clashed,' he stated to the publication. 'Initially, I felt a sense of relief, but simultaneously pondered my parents' perspectives. Given our Haitian heritage, which often doesn't embrace the LGBTQ+ community, I considered whether this revelation was merely a fleeting phase.'
In 2015, the now-31-year-old openly declared his homosexuality to his family, receiving supportive reactions. However, he chose not to share this personal information with his father, uncertain of the best approach.
'Currently, I feel better than ever,' he remarked. 'Despite periods of sadness throughout my life, I'm optimistic about my future. While I may not experience complete contentment now, I'm moving in the right direction. I'm on a path to discover lasting fulfillment.'
'I don't identify as straight; I don't identify as gay; it's just me. However, I identify as gay and will henceforth be forthright about it. This honesty will hopefully reduce any social awkwardness. In this process of self-acceptance, I'm striving for authenticity. I haven't fundamentally changed since my high school years; I'm ready to embrace this new phase of my life.'
His highly anticipated third album, Timeless, is scheduled for release on June 7th.
