Play trailer2:06

A Low Down Dirty Shame (1994)

Corwin Anthony Hawkins, born in Houston, Texas on the 12th of March, 1965, attended St. Peter's Catholic School and finished his education there in 1982.

Throughout Texas, Corwin was renowned for his captivating two-hour stand-up comedy routines. These performances, held every Tuesday evening for four years, invariably filled the venues to capacity. His comic characters, including Kelly Kelly, Debra Debra, Fanisha Poontane, and Miku Waka, were particular favourites among Dallas residents. He also famously imitated prominent celebrities, such as Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, and Grace Jones.

Although his every show was entirely spontaneous, Corwin managed to captivate audiences through a constant stream of intriguing costume changes, featuring extravagant dresses and expensive footwear. As 'Amazing Grace', a persona that challenged conventional norms, Hawkins opted for chic, unconventional attire in comparison to the then prevalent long evening gowns favoured by other female impersonators. Instead, Amazing Grace was known for her impeccably styled bob, Chanel suits, and exquisite Ferragamo footwear. This look, far more akin to an elegant socialite than a pageant queen, formed an intriguing contrast to the frenetic comedy that followed.

Audience members fortunate enough to secure seats near the stage often became unwitting participants in the evening's entertainment. They might be unexpectedly pulled onto the stage to serve as props for the remainder of the show; their night might involve involuntary dancing, singing, and even being coaxed into removing their clothing, much to the enjoyment of the entire audience. Notable guests that attended his shows during their Dallas visits include Keith Carradine, Lucy Arnaz and Grace Jones, amongst others.

Corwin amassed numerous awards in female impersonator competitions. In 1991, he was crowned 'Miss Gay Texas' as 'Amazing Grace'. The subsequent year saw him win 'Texas Entertainer of the Year', followed by his triumph as the 'National Entertainer of the Year' in 1992 at an event held in Louisville, Kentucky.

Corwin's talents were noted by Keenan Ivory Wayans, who observed his performances on Def Comedy Jam, B.E.T., and HBO Comedy specials. Consequently, Corwin was offered the role of (Wayman), originally intended for Ms. RuPaul. He subsequently gained a place in the competitive tryouts at the L.A. Improv.

Corwin sadly passed away on the 5th of August, 1994, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas, succumbing to pneumonia. He was 29 years old at the time of his demise.
