Portland Pride's Historical Context

The genesis of Pride events in Portland traces back to the 1970s, commencing with a Gay Pride Fair held in the South Park Blocks in 1975, which attracted approximately two hundred attendees; subsequently, in 1976, the fair relocated to Tom McCall Waterfront Park and featured fifteen vendor stalls. By the early 1980s, the commemoration had experienced considerable expansion, with an estimated two thousand individuals participating in the marches of 1982 and 1983.

Numerous other significant moments have occurred over the years: In the year 1989, participants, including the Portland Gay Men's Chorus, observed the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Pride Northwest, the organization spearheading Portland Pride, was established in 1994, signifying over three decades of empowering the LGBTQIA+ populace in Portland.
