Concurrently, her father, Denzel, is responsible for introducing queer representation onto the big screen in Gladiator II, a film in which he portrayed the character of Marcinus, a complex bisexual nobleman. During the previous month, he expressed regret over the removal of a same-sex kiss from the cinematic production.

At that juncture, Washington conveyed that he had, in fact, kissed a male character within the motion picture, yet the scene was excised; he speculated that perhaps the filmmakers "lost their nerve." He further recounted having delivered a full-on kiss to the individual's lips, surmising that the audience or studio might not have been prepared for such an act at that point. He then pointed out, quite dramatically, that he had vanquished the character approximately five minutes subsequent to the embrace, asserting, "This is Gladiator, after all! It signified the kiss of death!"

While the movie continued to offer ample content for appreciation among its queer audience, the absence of Denzel's same-sex kiss remained regrettable.
